Part Four - a stroll through Wesel town centre
Leaving the station building, this is your first view of the town centre - an avenue of trees going though some lovely gardens
Reaching the end of the gardens, crossing over the inner city tree lined ring road, the first building to your right is the Kaiserhof Hotel - a very popular hotel with visitors from Felixstowe. The tall structure you can see behind the hotel, is the local radio and TV mast - a useful landmark if you lose your sense of direction as you wander through the town.
Carry onto into town until you see the Berliner Tor. This massive structure was originally part of the ancient city defence wall, but is now home to a restaurant and bar. The area around the Berliner Tor is, together with the main market square, the focal point of major events held in Wesel. Come here to see the outside ice-skating ring set up for the Christmas season.
Peeping over the top of the building on the left hand side of the picture, you can see the top of the town's water tower.
Walking past the Berliner Tor look to the right hand side of the square to see the main Post Office building, then cross the road using the pedestrian priority crossing, and you enter the pedestrianised main shopping road.
Wander through the town shopping area, taking in the wide range of shops - everything from "high street" chain stores to quirky individual shopping outlets.
The next major landmark is the Willibrodi Dom - the town's cathedral. Heavily damaged during WW11 the cathedral has now been restored to its former glory.
Passing the cathedral, we look back to see the building from the other direction as we walk onwards through the town.
We have now reached the outskirts of the inner town and are now heading down the tree-lined roadway that will soon bring us to the Rhine promenade.
At last, after our short walk of about one mile, we have arrived at the Rhine promenade with views up (towards Cologne and Switzerland) or downstream towards Holland and the North Sea
