Thinking of going to Wesel ?
The Association arrange an annual trip going at different times of the year to give members the opportunity to see life in Wesel in the different seasons and to see different attractions, for example - Christmas Markets, PPP in August and Hanse Fest in October.
Travelling with the Association or in your own Group is the best way to keep travel costs to the minimum as there are many opportunities to share costs. A coach to and from Stansted for example will work out less than travelling by yourself. The Association has a lot of experience and will be happy to share this information with anyone thinking of arranging their own Group trip.
Travelling to Wesel by yourself ?
Wesel is about 216 miles from Felixstowe as the crow flies, but of course there is a bit of sea in the way to get over or under - so there are several options.
Flights, Ferries and Tunnel details
Flight - The most popular route is via Stansted airport.
Ryan Air www.ryanair.com used to fly Stansted to Weese a small airfield about 30 miles drive from Wesel, but that is no longer available. Beside which, there was no public transport between Weese and Wesel, so a hire car was required or a friend in Wesel to drive over to collect you.
Air Berlin www.airberlin.com fly Stansted to Dussledorf International from where there is a direct (no changing required) train service into Wesel, or if someone comes to collect you by car, it will take about 45 minutes.
Other options include flights to and from Dortmund or Cologne
Ferry (1) - It is about 170 miles Felixstowe town centre to Wesel town centre by car, excluding the 80 miles of North Sea to cross. Drive from Felixstowe to Harwich, then onto the Stena Ferry service to the Hook of Holland (www.stenaline.co.uk) then a drive through Netherlands and into Germany to Wesel. Allow about 3 hours to drive from the Hook to Wesel, but it can take longer if you get caught up in the rush hour going past Rotterdam on their equivalent of our M25 ! Stena run a day time or overnight service.
Ferry (2) - We know a few people who do this -it is possible to do the journey by public transport. Train or bus from Felixstowe to Ipswich then onto Harwich to catch the Stena ferry as a foot passenger. On arrival at the Hook, the tram service takes you to Rotterdam or other train stations then onto Utrecht, Arnham before arriving in Wesel. Website to consult - www.nationalrail.co.uk for the UK train information and www.bahn.com for trains to Wesel.
Ferry (3) - Involves driving from Felixstowe to one of the Channel ferry ports (e.g. Dover) to get over to France (e.g. Calais) or Belgium, followed by a drive to Wesel. A longer car journey but shorter and cheaper ferry crossing. Several websites including www.poferries.com and many others. Try "google" cheap ferry to France or something similar.
Tunnel (1) - Involves driving from Felixstowe to the tunnel terminal at Folkestone, through the tunnel, then a drive to Wesel. Try www.eurotunnel.com. A popular way to avoid flying, waiting around in airports or a sea crossing.
Tunnel (2) - Again we don't know anyone who has done this, but it is possible to go by public transport. Bus or train to Ipswich, then onto one of the Eurostar terminals, followed by train from your Eurostar destination onto Wesel. www.eurostar.com
Fares - It is just not possible to quote fare prices. These change almost from hour to hour or day to day and much depends on the mode of travel chosen, the numbers of people travelling together, the standard of travel selected and of course the date and time that you want to travel.
Accommodation in Wesel - there is a full range of hotels and guest houses available in and close to Wesel. See www.wesel.de
Many of our members prefer to stay with a host family and our sister organisation - the Wesel Felixstowe Twinning Association may be able to arrange a host family for new visitors to Wesel. If you are contemplating making a link between a Felixstowe Club or Society and your opposite number in Wesel, you may find that an offer from you to host visitors from Wesel will prompt an offer from Wesel to reciprocate your hospitality.
